Maths at Bean
Our aim is for all children to become confident, competent, and independent mathematicians who are able to use the skills of calculation, reasoning and problem solving. We use the Power Maths scheme to teach maths from Reception to Year 6. This follows a mastery approach, using a range of representations and concrete resources to build children’s understanding in small cumulative steps. In each lesson, teachers use an initial problem to introduce the concept and to draw out discussion and reasoning before modelling solutions. Children are then provided with opportunities for whole class practice and further discussion before working independently. These activities give the children the opportunity to develop their fluency and then move on to more complex problems. Each lesson enables all children to achieve and to be challenged.
